Does Meek Mean Whimpy?

Matthew 5: 5,

“Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.” King James version.

“Blessed (inwardly peaceful, spiritually secure, worthy of respect) are the gentle (the kind hearted, the sweet spirited, the self controlled) for they will inherit the earth.” Amplified version.

“How blessed are those who are humble, because it is they who will inherit the earth.”  New International version.

Gentle?  Meek? Humble?  Does that sound “whimpy” to you?  How can people like that inherit the earth?  The world believes that military power takes possession of the earth.

But hear what God also says:

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” James 4:10

“Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:4

“And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”  Matthew 23:12

“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6

“And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death, even the death of the cross.” Philippians 2:8

“Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me?  The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.” John 14:10

“Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” Matthew 16:24
