I likely should have started with this message….but it was not complete yet. But, it really is the beginning of building our foundation on the Rock.
The Name of our Savior
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.” Revelation 2:17
Do you know what this means? Are you eating the hidden manna? Do you know about the white stone and what name is written on it? I believe I know.
The hidden manna is the Bread of Life and the Word of God. The white stone is the righteous Rock that we build our foundation on. It is the rock that smashes down the kingdoms of this world. And the name written on this white stone is Yehoshua (Hebrew language of Judaism) or Yeshua (Aramaic – the common language of His day). No one really knows this unless they receive Him as Savior – the Son of the Father who saves us. Let me explain.
Hebrew and Aramaic are related languages. Hebrew is the original language of the Jewish people in the Old Testament. But when they were taken captive and returned to Jerusalem and Judah, they were then speaking Aramaic which they learned while in the Medo-Persian Empire in Babylon. Later, the Romans conquered the Medo-Persians…and it was under the Roman Empire that our Savior lived while on earth. Aramaic was still the common language of the Israelites….and Hebrew their religious tongue.
Our Saviors Name In Hebrew: Yahushua (could also be spelled Yahoshua) the root word is YAH or YAHWEY meaning the LORD (Almighty); Yahoshua meaning the Son of the Father YAH, It also means to free, save, deliver, help, defend, bring salvation, savior, to get victory.
Jehoshua or Joshua are derived from Yahushua. The Hebrew language does really not have a J sound, so it is pronounced as Y for yah. Remember Joshua’s role in the Old Testament to bring the Israelites into the Promised land? He saved them from the wilderness and their enemies. Sound familiar?
Our Saviors Name in Aramaic: Yashua. This was the common language Yashua and His people spoke in His time on earth.
In Matthew 1:21 we read that Joseph was instructed what to name this child conceived of the Holy Spirit. He was told to name him, “the one who saves” or Savior. What language do you think he heard this in? In Hebrew, that name is Yehoshua – the one from Yeh who saves. In Aramaic – the one who saves.
When at age 12 and our Savior was discussing scriptures in the temple, don’t you imagine He was discussing them in the Hebrew language of the Old Testament. What name do you think they used in addressing Him then? When our Savior was baptized and our Heavenly Father said, “This is My Beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” Is it possible that our Heavenly Father said, “This is Yahoshua (meaning Son of YAH the Father)”! Surely, the Father knows the true name of His Son and our Savior!
When our Savior was dying on the cross and He called out to God His Father, He spoke in Aramaic…. “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” Aramaic was the common language of this time. Doesn’t it seem like our Savior would have been called by His Aramaic name of Yashua by his disciples and those around Him?
So, why do we name our Savior as “Jesus” today, and not Yashua or Yahoshua, or even Joshua in English? Why would they translate His name to Jesus?
Where did the name Jesus come from?
In AD306-337 the Roman Emperor Constantine and the Holy Roman Catholic Church joined together to increase their power and control over people. They worked to create a “state religion” by combining paganism with the Christian religion. They needed a “god” name that did not sound Hebrew, so it would also be acceptable to those of popular pagan religions. They wanted a universal government and a universal religion. The Greek Hellenistic era had a profound impact on a huge area and that carried over into the Roman Empire age. Pagan Zeus or “almighty LORD” in the Greco-Roman “universal” language of that time, would be the word Iesous. So, Iesous could work as the name of “almighty LORD” no matter who is being addressed as god!
So, our Savior and Lord’s name from the Yahushua (Hebrew) and the Yashua (Aramaic)….was translated into Greek to became Iesous (literally LORD Zeus). And Greek Iesous eventually became translated into English Jesus. The “J” is a modern English alpha character….often replacing the “I” or “Y” sound in Greek. They sound similar enough to make Iesous become Jesus.
Today we call our Savior Jesus Christ. Christ (Greek) is a title like king or president. It means “the anointed one”. In Hebrew, Mashiach means Messiah or “anointed one”.
Should we rightly be naming our Savior Jesus Christ (Hail Zeus Anointed One) or Yahushua Mashiach (LORD Almighty YAH’s Son, the Anointed One who saves, the Savior)?
Read Philippians with the Hebrew name…….
Philippians 2:9-11, “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Yahushua (Son of Yah) every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Yehushua Mashiach is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Wow! So, now you may ask, “What do I do with this new understanding? Does it matter that I have been calling Him Jesus all these years?” Do not be alarmed…..God looks on the heart. He knows if your intentions were to call on the name of the Son of the Father and our Savior! But, for me, I have come to endear myself to the name Yashua! He would have actually been called Yashua by those who loved Him. You can research and decide for yourself.
Let me add one more warning. He also knows the heart of deceivers. There are those who call on the name of Jesus who are actually calling on the name of Iesous or Zeus or LORD or the Shining One. It is deceitful terminology. Maybe that helps to understand one reason for our Savior’s response in the parable of the 10 virgins and their lamps….” “Lord, Lord, open to us!” But, he answered and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.’” Calling on the LORD requires one to know which LORD they are calling on. We must KNOW HIM, the only true and living Savior. I include Jesus when writing because that is the only name some people know Him by. I prefer to call Him Yashua (Yah’s Son and our Savior).
Now you might understand why I call Him Yeshua. I have received the white stone with the new name written on it…and I know that name and have received it as my own. I believe there is power only in that name. I believe it is the name of Yeshua that is and will be exalted! I believe it is at that name that every knew will bow and every tongue confess Yeshua is LORD and King!
