Getting Hungry and Thirsty?

I hear the Holy Spirit asking me, “Is your hunger and thirst for righteousness increasing? Is it becoming a passionate desire in your heart?”

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God), for they shall be completely satisfied.”  Matthew 5:6.

Can you sense the passion and overwhelming desire in this hunger and thirst? These are basic survival needs that must be pursued and met to really live.  King David expresses this passion in Psalm 42:1, “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.”

When we become children of the Father through Jesus the Son, this same passion for right standing with God is created in each one of us.  We are created for fellowship with God.  I must be enveloped in His love or I die.  Do you remember the romantic love sick cry typical of today’s popular songs, “I can’t live without you!”?

This treasured blessing in Matthew 5:6 is that when we pursue Him and His righteousness, we will be completely satisfied!  Our love hunger is completely and continually fulfilled! What a promise!  He passionately pursues us, should we expect to do otherwise?  I hunger to know Him more, so I pursue His Word of Truth (the Bible) earnestly.

It is said that King David was a man after God’s heart.  I think that means David chased after the heart of God to know Him more….and in that pursuit; his heart became more like God’s.  Who we really love and what we really believe will determine what we think is right; and that will be what we live by in our actions.  With that understanding, it becomes obvious why we need to know the Word of God (the Bible) so that we know His truth and can live in Him.
