Building your house on the Rock is the goal in Matthew 7:24-29.
““Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”
And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.”
Matthew chapters 5-7 are all part of Yeshua Jesus sermon on the mount. It was all one sermon, one huge important message. Have you ever wondered, “What did Jesus preach and teach to all the people as He traveled around”? Here is huge disclosure! This lengthy sermon on the mount holds the actual words He spoke.
He taught us how to build our lives on the Rock…..how to humble ourselves to repent and change from following the world to following Him. He taught us to be obedient to follow Him and his Father’s words in the straight and narrow way. He gave us the Holy Spirit to comfort, teach, convict and strengthen us. He taught that we would have trouble and persecution in this world. The adversary would come to steal the Word and our relationship (being one) with Yeshua Jesus. He said there would be a lot of stormy attacks to deal with in this temporary earthly life. He warned about pleasures of this world, distractions, deceptions, and the infiltration of false prophets/teachers. BUT, if we build on the Rock, then no weapon formed against us will prosper (Isaiah 54:17, Romans 8:35-39). He taught us to pray and fellowship with Him rather than hold onto only a religious system and performance.
We have a part and a choice in where and how we build our life, our house. We can build on the sandy beach and frolic unwittingly in the water and build make-believe castles in the sand. We can even hear and sing and dance to religious sounds, but just never practice or do His Word and His way….and we are still on the sand.
Or we can do that hard work of building a secure strong house on the TRUE ROCK of Yeshua Jesus in relationship. His whole sermon is to teach us the right (righteous) way to build on the TRUE ROCK that we might be saved.
His teachings are amazing and full of wisdom! He speaks to us with authority and truth; because He is supreme authority, truth, and wisdom! We ought to seriously listen, pay close attention, and do what He says! He is our Savior as well as Lord and King!
