What Can I Truly Hope For?

We can have true hope in something if it is exemplified in God’s character and spoken in His Word. He desires that we be like Him and do His ways.

Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Romans 8:29, “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.”

Jesus said that if you see Him then you see the Father (John 14:9).  They are one and Jesus did nothing without the Father (John 10:30, John 5:19).  They have the same character.  So, let’s look at the character of Jesus, what He said and did…..

We can see that Jesus had compassion, authoritatively spoke only truth, healed the sick, delivered the captive, released the demon possessed, fed the multitudes, protected the downtrodden, and preached the gospel.

Jesus was moved by compassion and faith. He responded when asked and came when welcomed or invited.  He did not force Himself on others.  He did not  manipulate, compromise, or entertain to get followers. Jesus rebuked when appropriate and even raged against the ungodly, the religious hypocrites, the greedy, and the proud. Jesus blessed the children. Jesus was gentle with women and treated them with respect. Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd who takes good care of His sheep….and even gives His life for them. Jesus had a stong and intimate relationship with His disciples/followers.

Jesus is perfect in love and in the fruits of the Holy Spirit, so we can say that He is loving, hopeful, faithful, good, gentle, kind, patient, joyful, peaceful, and always under control of self by being loyal, submitted and obedient to His Father through the Holy Spirit, and totally without sin (Galatians 5:22-25, 2 Corinthians 5:21).

The character of Jesus is 1 Corinthians 13… like this – He is patient, kind, and thoughtful.  He does not envy, does not brag, is not proud.  He is not rude and does not dishonor others.  He is not self-seeking, but rather seeks the Father’s way.  He is not easily offended or angered.  He keeps no record of wrongs and does not hold a grudge, rather He is forgiving.  He does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  He always protects His own, always trusts the Father, always hopes, always perseveres and endures.  He never fails.

Jesus is always right – righteous.  He is always truth.  Jesus never fell to temptation or the flesh. He is always good and does what is wise and what is good.  He requires people to turn from evil and repent/change to follow Him.  He encourages and rebukes and disciplines those He loves (Revelation 3:19).

Because Jesus and the Father are One…we can also know the character of the Father!

When we know the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit and their character…then it is easier to set our hopes on what is right and good.

We also know the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit by the words they speak through their written word in the Bible.  They never lie.  So, what you read is who they are and they do what they say they will do.  They are Truth!  They are faithful!  We can have assured hope when something is in line with the character and words of Father, Son Yeshua and the Holy Spirit…..according to His will.

Is what you are hoping for in line with His character and His word?
