We have hope when someone who loves us stands for us and with us. How much more so when we have Father, Yeshua Jesus Son, and Holy Spirit standing for us, with us, and in us! The Bible tells us that if we have intimate relationship with Him, He will write His Words, His Ways, His righteous principles in our hearts and minds! He will change us from the inside out. We are new creatures. We are His workmanship. His love enables our transformation and is what gives us hope of righteous living!
So, why would I want to live righteously? I think of three reasons right away: primarily because of love for Him; secondarily because it is good, right, and true; thirdly because it brings good consequences and blessing to me and my life.
First consider the main motivation of love. If I am hoping for a good marriage and a good life together with the one I love, then it will be my desire to please my spouse because I love him. I love my spouse so I would never think to entertain the temptation of adultery. Now, if I did not love my spouse, adultery might be a temptation. Spiritual adultery is life in the flesh; the enticing way of the world; brings temporary pleasure, excitement, entertainment; is against the standard/law of God; ends in destruction and disease; etc. Why have I never struggled with temptation concerning adultery? Because I LOVE my husband! My mind and heart is set on him! My hope for our life together and that of our family also supports my choice and actions.
If Yeshua Jesus is our Bridegroom and we are His bride, then what does this tell us about learning to walk in His Spirit instead of walking in the flesh? It seems to me that the more we love Him, the less we entertain the temptation of the flesh. When we look at it that way, it seems simple!
I am reminded of 1 John 1: 5-10, “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.”
Do you see it? If we love Yeshua Jesus then we have a strong desire to fellowship with Him. He is in the Light so we need to walk in the Light/Spirit with Him. And when we sin (walk the wrong way in the flesh), we need to confess it and repent and get up and back into fellowship again. The Father has made a Way through His Son so that when we try to walk in the spirit yet fall, He will pick us up, hold us close, instruct and encourage us so that we can stand up and try again. As we practice walking in the Spirit, we should be getting better at it! And walking in the Light/Spirit is so much better than walking in the darkness/flesh.
