HOPE to be Salt and Light

In one of our previous studies, we looked at Matthew 5: 13-20.  We are to be salty and not lose our taste or our purpose.  Salt preserves good by preventing decay and rot.  Salt also enhances the flavor of all food (even sweets).  If the salt loses its saltiness, it has no purpose.

Then Yeshua Jesus reminds us of being Light to the world. We are to be lights shining in a dark world revealing the glorious ways of God and His kingdom.  The Light is in our hearts and minds and should be shining out in our behavior. We are not walking in the worldly darkness, but rather demonstrate good deeds and moral character as walking in light and truth.

Then, Yeshua Jesus goes on to tell us that He did not come to condemn or destroy God’s Law, but rather to fulfill it.  He tells us that God’s Law stands forever. And anyone who practices them and teaches them is great in God’s kingdom.  He goes on to explain this is not the same religious man-made law that the Pharisees and Saducees teach.

I notice that both salt and light have two of the same qualities.  They represent both qualities of Law and Grace.  Salt preserves good like the Law.  Salt also enhances the flavor of all foods like grace is full of mercy to make each one be the best they can be.  Light exposes darkness the same way that the Law exposes sin.  And light also overcomes darkness by revealing the true good way which is by His grace.

If we say we only need grace (and no law), then we are abusing grace and the truth is not in us.  Claiming only grace without accountability and faithfulness leads to lasciviousness (lustful, immoral), licentiousness (disregarding rues, unprincipled), narcissism (selfishness and self-centered), greed, and dark worldliness.

If we say we only need law to save ourselves by our own good works (no grace needed), then we are not truly recognizing Yeshua Jesus and His required sacrifice to save us.  Claiming only law makes people think they can be saved by their good works.  It leads to pride, legalism, judgment of others, and a hard uncompassionate heart.

Yeshua Jesus says we need to be like salt and light.  We need BOTH law (truth) and grace.  We need to fellowship with Him in the light and practice walking in His ways of truth, strengthened by His grace.

2 Corinthians 12:9 (Amplified version), “He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you [My lovingkindness and My mercy are more than enough—always available—regardless of the situation]; for My power is being perfected and is completed and shows itself most effectively in your weakness.”

Ephesians 2: 8-10, “For it is by grace [God’s remarkable compassion and favor drawing you to Christ] that you have been saved [actually delivered from judgment and given eternal life] through faith. And this salvation is not of yourselves [not through your own effort], but it is the undeserved, gracious gift of God; not as a result of your works [nor your attempts to keep the Law], so that no one will be able to boast or take credit in any way for his salvation. For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared for us beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us].”

Our HOPE is in Yeshua Jesus!  He is our HOPE of salvation!  AND He is our HOPE of righteousness (actually living in His right and good ways and good laws/standards) by learning, being obedient and following Him, repenting and practicing change when falling, and having faith (believing, trusting in, depending on, relying on, fellowshipping with, walking with) in Yeshua Jesus as a bride lives with her husband and head authority.  What an awesome HOPE!  I have HOPE of salvation and also of walking and living in righteousness!  Stay full of faith and do not leave His side…He will never leave or forsake you. You do not need to trust your good works to be saved. And in Him, by being full of faith and trust, you can learn to walk in His right ways/laws….the narrow road….and if you fall, He will pick you up through repentance and forgiveness.

Hebrews 13:5 (Amplified version),  “I will never[under any circumstances]desert you [nor give you up nor leave you without support, nor will I in any degree leave you helpless],nor will I  forsake or let you down or relax My hold on you[assuredly not]!”
