Is Being Religious Being a Christian?

My first educational introduction into Christianity as being a relationship (not just a religion) was through my confirmation class study of the book, “How To Be A Christian Without Being Religious” by Fritz Ridenour.  It is a study on the book of Romans. Here I heard that Christianity is supposed to be more than a religion.  The “Who” of Christianity is more important than the traditional religious church teachings concerning the “what” of doctrines.  Christianity is actually in reality and truth….a relationship with Jesus….the same as starting a relationship with any other person…and growing to know Him more…increasing in intimacy.

Years passed, but the seed of that message stayed planted in my heart.  In spite of that planted message, I had gone to college with the idea of experiencing the free worldly “college life”….to be “on my own”.  It resulted in much disappointment.  I found following the world or doing things “my way” was not working.  I realized my own propensity to sinfulness. During my second year in college, a high school friend reminded me about meaningful relationship with Jesus by telling me about her experience of being “born again” in Jesus and the filling of the Holy Spirit.

So, one evening alone in my dorm room, I realized my own sinful nature and inability to “do it alone”.  I asked Jesus to be my Savior and Lord in relationship….I wanted change…and I promised I would be committed and faithful to Him…and I asked Him to help me to know Him and follow Him.  I had also heard and read in the Bible that He had sent the Holy Spirit to guide and help His people, so I also asked for the Holy Spirit to come inside me too.  He heard my prayer and He did come into me!  I experienced Him!

I knew then and continue to know with certainty of truth that the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are real and true.  I knew and continue to know that what is said in the Bible is true.  I asked with a sincere pure heart and He came.  I cannot explain the joy and love in that moment!  He was as real as if He was standing there visually right in front of me.  He was more real than anything I had ever experienced before!  His love is immense!  I was now founded in relationship with Father, Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit according to His Word of truth and by personal experience!  This was truth in my own reality!

I knew Jesus as a person in my life that day, not just a historical person promoting religion.  I had found Jesus and my own personal committed relationship with Him. He accepted me the way a bridegroom proposes to and marries His bride.  I became accepted in my Beloved!  I had found Truth!  I betrothed myself to Him. I knew that one day I would see Him face to face…and until that time, His Holy Spirit would be in me, alongside me, and work with and through me as my Helper. Now, head knowledge and heart knowing had come alive in experiential reality for me.  I KNEW HIM personally, the highest reality and the real actual TRUTH!  True Christianity is not a religion.  It is a real relationship with Father through the Son by the power of the Holy Spirit – real persons, not forces or ideas!

Open your mind to God’s Word and your heart to Yeshua Jesus as your own personal Savior and Lord!  You too will experience real actual Truth!  Yeshua Jesus is the real Truth (the Way, the Truth, the Life).  Then, the  Holy Spirit will help you to make worldview adjustments from that day forward.  This is the beginning of learning real truth in real reality. We are His workmanship so that we might become conformed to His image and be like Him!
