We must have a clear knowledge of the beginning of a book if we are to really understand and appreciate the ending! So, we are looking with more detail at these first chapters. I am sure the Holy Spirit will reveal more to you than what I offer now as you meditate these verses.
Notice that the serpent is satan. We will find that reptile likeness throughout the Bible as representing satan….in words like serpents, snakes, vipers, and dragons.
Satan begins his deception with a question testing people to know what God has said. He asks it in a way that makes God look bad and unfairly strict or stingy….here asking if God told them to NOT eat of ANY tree in the garden. Notice the woman’s answer also has error. She adds that they are not supposed to even touch the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. She is a little confused and unsure now. Next, satan outright lies in the form of giving her information that he states as fact, but is not true. Again, he makes God look like “the bad guy” and gives the reason for God’s instruction to not eat of that tree as because He does not want them to know what God knows. Can she trust God and His Word?
Now, the woman is intrigued and looks at the tree closely…seeing that the fruit looks good and delightful…plus, this new information says it will make her wise. She was convinced to take it and consume it…and share it with Adam.
I believe that is the same way satan convinced one-third of the angels of heaven to mutiny with him against God. What is the technique? Question God’s Word; confuse God’s instructions; twist truth into a lie that looks and tastes good…seems wise; tell you it will make you god-like and under your own authority (humanism); invite you to consume the pleasant looking, sounds good, and tastes delicious evil thing. Thus, we have been led into disobedience and rebellion….sin and destruction and death.
Now, there are consequences. We are separated from God and His glorious covering of righteousness. We are no longer under His protection. We are standing on our own. We now stand naked…in our own strength. We try to sew from the earth to cover our nakedness, and prove our abilities, to cover up what we have done wrong.
BUT GOD….He does not give us up. He comes calling for us! Where are you? We are hiding because we thought He would be angered and vengeful and punishing! How important it is to really KNOW GOD and who He really is….Truth! Instead, our Father covers our dead nakedness with the life blood and flesh of animals (vs. 21 – amplified version says long tunics….meaning to cover the whole body).
He comes to us with questions…not condemnation….not a forceful blow. What are God’s questions? Where are you? Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat of the tree that I warned you not to consume? Often in His Word, God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) continually encourage and convict us to “Examine ourselves”? (2 Corinthians 13:5). Their awareness of being uncovered and exposed – without God’s covering, was clear evidence that they had eaten of the knowledge of good and evil. They now knew evil … when God had only planned good for them! Knowing evil is not pretty…it is ugly!
Now there are consequences:
The serpent crawls on its belly on the ground eating dust (remember that man is made out of the dust of the earth-satan’s goal is to consume man and rule over earth as his kingdom). Satan wants to exalt himself on all the high places, but he has been brought down to crawl on his belly. God speaks out His first prophetic announcement that He will have a human anointed offspring, Messiah, who will tread on satan’s head…even as satan bruises His heel.
God knows the beginning from the end. He knew this would happen before the foundation of the world; yet, He determined even before beginning that having a family filled with love would be worth it all.
Ephesians 1:4, “Even as in His love He chose us, actually picked us out for Himself as His own, in Christ before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy (consecrated and set apart for Him) and blameless in His sight, even above reproach, before Him in love.”
They all agreed to pursue selfless sacrificial love….Father, Son, Holy Spirit…and announced in the beginning….”Let us make man in our image and likeness”. I believe they all knew their part in this plan…and agreed to be faithful to it!!!
The consequence to women was pain in childbirth and submission to her husband. That can be seen in real reality. “Liberated women” may not like it, but it is truth…if that narrow road is not walked on, it ends in destruction (Ephesians 5:22-24). Do not forget, that in Ephesians 5: 25-28, husbands are instructed to love their wives as Christ loves His church bride. Which do you think is an easier narrow road to stay on?
The consequence to man was now working in a cursed earth. The earth was under man’s authority. It was now cursed because he was now a fallen man under mutiny with satan. The earth would now be hard and full of weeds…and require much toil….so very different from the garden God had prepared for them. So, in truth, who is the hard taskmaster and burden maker and liar? He is the one who leads us into the knowledge of evil choices.
It became necessary to remove Adam and Eve, God’s created children, from the garden He had provided for them. Why? The tree of life grew in the garden. Vs 22 – if man in his fallen state would eat from the tree of life, he would live forever in that sinful state! So, God in His mercy, put a guard and a strong barrier about that tree. It is reserved for us in the next age….in our glorified state of redemption and righteousness (Revelation 2: 7, 22:2, 14, 19).
Our God is the Alpha and Omega…the Beginning and the End…the First and the Last! (Revelation 1:8) We are only here in the first chapters of His Book and yet He has already prophesied and promised a good end! Oh, how I love Father, Son Yeshua Jesus, and Holy Spirit!!!
