Warning: Humanism – Strong Delusion – 2 Thessalonians 2

What is a strong delusion?  It means believing something is good when it is not.  Isn’t this the same strong delusion that Satan used to cause man to fall?  Consume from this tree outside of God’s will, and you can be your own god and make your own rules…See, it is pleasant to consume and appears good.  It will not hurt you.  It will make you wise to think your own thoughts.

Humanism is man operating outside of God and His truth….in his own efforts and own thoughts of wisdom….with a goal to lifting self up and seeking self pleasure.

In ancient Babel, fallen mankind learned they could join individuals together and multiply their power by joining together.  They determined to build a tower to the sky so that they might be like God.  Had God let them continue to exert supreme power in their fallen condition….evil would have ruled over earth, with limited chance for righteousness.  God scattered those humanistic people. He did it again with the flood during Noah’s days.

Today, we again have humanistic people making a good sounding global proclamation that “we are all in this together” and assuming “we can overcome this if we all stick together”.  It sounds good.  It sounds like love.  But, it is a strong delusion.  Are we including God in all this togetherness?  Are we following after truth and righteousness?  I am very concerned that  we are being globally humanistic, especially because the world says it is OK to worship any god you choose!

The Bible tells us that in the Last Days before Jesus returns there will be great deception….strong delusion. The first thing Jesus warns about in Matthew 24 is “be careful that no one deceives you, leading you into error.”  He warns about false saviors and false prophets! Who do people look to in order to save the world today?  Who and what do we listen to concerning future predictions for the world?  What words and whose words are people living by?

In the book of Revelation…the first horse is the white horse.  It signifies the battle of truth over deception.  Strong delusion is from the anti-Christ spirit, which the Bible characterizes as charismatic and pleasant to look at and sounds good.  I believe that the white horse that Jesus releases in the first seal is His warrior messenger who comes to earth to lead armies to battle with truth…in peace…speaking the truth in love. I see that white horse riding and doing battle, but few are choosing to pay attention and listen.  No one wants to hear truth!  Fighting for truth is a battle and few want to fight it and engage in that unpopular war.  How about you?  Are you willing to battle and stand up for absolute Truth and righteousness?  Are you being told it is OK to be a humanistic in the Christian religion?

Let’s look at excerpts from the Bible (Amplified version) in 2 Thessalonians 2 that describe this strong deception.  You can read the whole chapter as well.

“Now in regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, not to be quickly unsettled or alarmed …..Let no one in any way deceive or entrap you, for that day will not come unless the apostasy comes first (that is, the great rebellion, the abandonment of the faith by professed Christians), and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction (the Antichrist, the one who is destined to be destroyed), who opposes and exalts himself so proudly and so insolently above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he actually enters and takes his seat in the temple of God, publicly proclaiming that he himself is God….For the mystery of lawlessness (rebellion against divine authority and the coming reign of lawlessness) is already at work; …..

The coming of the Antichrist, the lawless one is through the activity of Satan, attended with great power, all kinds of counterfeit miracles, and deceptive signs and false wonders (all of them lies), and by unlimited seduction to evil with all the deception of wickedness for those who are perishing, because they did not welcome the love of the truth (of the gospel) so as to be saved (they were spiritually blind, and rejected the truth that would have saved them). Because of this God will send upon them (those who reject Jesus) a misleading influence, an activity of error and deception, so they will believe the lie, in order that all may be judged and condemned who did not believe the truth about their sin, and the need for salvation through Christ, but instead took pleasure in unrighteousness.

But we… give thanks to God for you, believers beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through the sanctifying work of the Spirit that sets you apart for God’s purpose, and by your faith in the truth of God’s word that leads you to spiritual maturity. It was to this end that He called you through our gospel (the good news of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection), so that you may obtain and share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.  So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold tightly to the traditions (truth) which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us.

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting comfort and encouragement and the good well-founded hope of salvation by His grace, comfort and encourage and strengthen your hearts, keeping them steadfast and on course in every good work and word.”

Quick summary: The strong deception/delusion is a trap to remove you from a living faith in Jesus ( a faith that you live by and act out in your life)….towards an anti-christ spirit (worldly humanistic faith that you participate in). There will be an apostasy first by those professing the Christian faith, but abandoning a living faith, one lived out in Christ and in Truth. This satanic spirit has already been working and is characterized by being proud, self-focused, and vocal.  It is lawless (no righteous rules) and forsakes the truth (makes truth relative to their own opinions and wants). This strong delusion/deception makes rebellious people spiritually blind.  Instead, they look at lies that sound good and counterfeit signs that appear miraculous and wonderful.  Those without Christ will be enticed to pursue pleasures in unrighteousness (wrong being and wrong doing…although it appears good and pleasant to consume, partake in).

But, this is not for the believers with living faith (love relationship) with Jesus!  God has chosen to have a family to live in love relationship with… since the foundation of the world!  He has sent the Holy Spirit to help us mature spiritually unto sanctification (being set apart) and righteousness (right being and right doing)….to teach us in His absolute Truth!  So stand firm in truth..morality…righteousness….being steadfast in real good words and good works…those that proceed from the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. He loves us and gives us everlasting grace, comfort, encouragement, hope, and strength to persevere in living faith…..when we are with Him…. because we are with Him, we become overcomers as He takes His place of victory as King. Not our will, but His will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Not by our strength or wisdom, but because we are joined to His strength and wisdom….joined together in love, faith, and loyal trust!

Next, we look at the warning of the strong humanistic delusion in 2 Timothy 3-4.
