Genesis 7:1 – 8:15

You may be familiar with this part of Genesis where God saved Noah and his family through the flood (along with male and female partners of all land animals and birds).  Noah tried to be right and live right and lived in fellowship with God, while everyone else around him was wicked (twisted) and away from God.

Let’s consider something you may not have noticed before…the numbers.  This study is long…but we will find this information useful in our future studies as well. First, let’s look at the significance given to each number:

0 – there is no zero in Hebrew….unless it is after another number.  When used behind another number, it means it is amplified or multiplied.  So, in Matthew 18:24, when Jesus says we are to forgive not just 7 times, but 70 x 7, that meant many multiple times of 7….also 7 designates full righteousness.  That makes Jesus’ statement extra interesting and expressive.  When a value of zero was needed, the Hebrew just calls it nothing, empty, wasted or useless.

1 – means First, Oneness, Unity, Primary, not plural or divided, without change. In Deuteronomy 6:4 we see that God is One.  We also know that Yeshua Jesus is God’s Only Begotten Son, and the One Way to restored relationship with the One True Creator Father God.  We know that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are One in unity.  We also see the certainty of the changeless supreme qualities of God when the Bible prophesies often concerning “One day” or “in that day”.

2 – It can mean to divide and oppose OR it can mean to join as a pair working together. 2 offers a choice…for or against God….remember the 2 trees in the Garden of Eden – the tree of life or the tree of mans own knowledge of good and evil.  A cell can divide and multiply to build.    Two allows for multiplication…as man and woman filling the earth; Jesus sending the disciples out 2 x 2, and the 2 witnesses and 2 olive trees of Revelation to multiply His kingdom.  But, violent division of 2 sides, as in opposition can destroy and kill. Division from the truth is a lie.  So, 2 can also signify discernment.

3 – Three makes a solid foundation.  This is especially the focus of the Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  Ecclesiastes 4:12 says a 3 fold cord is not easily broken. The 3 Hebrew men who would not bow to the Babylonian idol…and God walked with them in the fire to save them.  The Tabernacle/Temple had 3 sections: the outer court, the inner court, the Holy Place.  The inner court had 3 furnishings: the menorah with 7 candlesticks (Holy Spirit), the table of showbread (Word of God), and the Altar of Incense (prayers of God’s people including Yeshua Jesus, our great High Priest, our Advocate with the Father).  Humans have an outside flesh, a soul personality, and a secret inner spiritual place.  The flesh of man has a body, soul personality/emotions, and mind.

4 – Designates governmental authority, and dominion. The 4 rivers encompassed the Garden of Eden. The 4 corners of the world – north, south, east, west.  The 4 horns (powers) on the 4 corners of the alter in the tabernacle.  The 4 living creatures around the throne of God (Revelation 4:8). The 4 horsemen of Revelation who come to bring authority and judgment to the world.

5 – Five is for being filled, prepared, empowered, and given strength through grace.  Holy anointing oil and holy incense had 5 ingredients (which signified that prayer enables power with God.) The church operates in the grace of God with strength in the 5 fold ministry. Jesus used 5 loaves to feed 5,000.

6 – Six is the number of man…who was created on the 6th day.  Six was originally intended to be for sacrificial love, finished work, and intimacy.  But, when man fell, the blessing turned to a curse.  So, it became significant as the man and the works of man (humanism). It is also the multiplied number of the beast in Revelation as 666. Six is now one short of the righteous perfection of 7.

7 – Is God’s completeness, wholeness, righteousness, holiness.  God rested on the 7th day and proclaimed a day of rest.  God appointed 7 holy prophetic feasts. There are 7 spirits before God’s throne. The Bible is full of 7’s, especially in the last book of Revelation.

8 – Eight means to “make fat”, or overflowing, satiated, with new beginnings….it moves from the natural to the supernatural. Babies were accepted into covenant with God by circumcision on the 8th day.  The tabernacle/temple was dedicated on the 8th day.  Eight days after His resurrection, Jesus appeared to his disciples in the upper room in his glorified body. Eight people were saved through the flood in Noah’s ark.

9 – Nine is for fruitfulness and multiplication of God’s kingdom.  We have the 9 fruits of the spirit in Galatians 5: 22-23.  Human birth takes 9 months.  The cycle of the appointed feasts takes 9 months. Jesus says the Good Shepherd will leave the 99 to go after the 1 sheep.  Of the 10 cleansed lepers, 9 returned to give thanks.

10 – Ten is completion….10 fingers, 10 toes.  10 commandments.  10 plagues in Egypt.  10 righteous could have saved Sodom and Gomorrah.  The parable of 10 virgins.  10 Days of Awe (warning and grace for repentance) at the end of the Feast of Trumpets until the Day of Atonement.  In the parable of the lost coin, the widow has 10 coins and searches for the lost one to make it complete again.  10 horns on the beast in Revelation.

11 – prophetic with the anointing of God (with God’s eyes), but sorcery, divination, and humanism (right in man’s own eyes) in an outside-of-God counterfeit.  The little horn of Daniel 7 is the 11th horn of the antichrist. Rebellious Esau had 11 chieftain sons (incomplete), while Jacob had 12 tribal sons.  When Judas betrayed Jesus and the number of disciples was incomplete in 11, they appointed a 12th under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.  5 + 6 = 11 so empowerment of man outside of grace is humanism and deceit.  But, empowerment of man by the Holy Spirit is prophetic.  Jesus lived to be 33 which is 11 x 3…the perfect prophet of the Trinity.

12 – perfect righteous government for authority and organization.  1 tribes of Israel.  12 disciples.  12 elders sitting around the throne of God in Revelation.  New Jerusalem has 12 foundations, 12 gates, 12 pearls.  Jesus taught in the temple at 12 years of age. 12 months in a year…12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night in one day.  12 primary constellations in the sky. Multiples of 12 like 24 and 144,000 reflect this same theme only multiplied times.

The Bible also uses multiples of these first numbers:

666 – three sixes means man (6) making himself as god (3)

777 – God in His righteous holy perfection. We see perfect righteous completion of the age with 7 seals, 7 trumpets, 7 bowls of wrath.

40 – is 4 x 10.  It is the time of probation, trial, testing, or learning discipline….man learning proper government and organization on earth.   Jesus was tested for 40 days in the wilderness.  Moses lived in Egypt for 40 years and then in the wilderness for 40 years and eventually with Israel as they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years.  Moses was 40 days and nights on the mountain to receive the 10 commandments.  After Noah entered the ark, it rained for 40 days and nights. Jonah warned Ninevah for 40 days.

144,000 – Adding zeros to the end of numbers reveals their extent of multiplication.  Often, when you see counts rounded to the nearest thousand, it is not an actual count….and sometimes just expressed as thousands upon thousands.  Here, 12 x 12 x 1000, is the number of His witnesses and evangelists in the last days of the tribulation in Revelation.  I have heard this could be interpreted as ……12 righteous from the family tribes of Israel and 12 righteous from the family apostles including the gentiles…multiplied by thousands.

Now, we can see the amazing wisdom and organization and perfection of God in everything…even numbers used throughout history!  What numbers are used in Genesis chapter 7?

2 – Animals and people going in 2 x 2….companions for multiplication and fruitfulness.

3 and 6 – Noah had 3 sons with 3 wives….3 men and 3 women found complete and righteous in God’s eyes.

7 – the number of clean animals to allow for holy worship and sacrifice. Vs 4, God warning that in 7 days the rain would begin….perfect judgment of righteousness.

8 – 8 people were saved by grace in the flood….. 5 + 3 = 8.  The number for new beginnings.

40 – it rained for 40 days and nights of trial and testing, another 40 days after seeing mountains and raven  sent out to find land….another 7 days (righteous salvation and deliverance) and sent dove…another 7 days and dove did not return, because He found a resting place.

150 days ( 5 x 3 x 10) and 5 months – Genesis 7:24 and 8:3, the waters prevailed on the earth and then diminished. Man now empowered by God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) and His grace in multiplied blessings.

600 – Noah was 600 years old when the flood came.  Man’s years multiplied with patience, even to allowing for mankind’s wickedness…until time of judgment.

601 and 1 month and 1 day (Genesis 8:13) – waters drying from land…covering of ark removed. God has added His prophecy of salvation for man through Him.  He also gives the rainbow to confirm this covenant.

The waters began in month 2 (the same day in Genesis where God separated the waters above and the waters below in the creation of earth), mountains are seen again in month 7 (God is the highest, righteousness restored), 6 months timespan, seventeenth day– we see in Genesis 7:11 and 8:4, that from the time the rain began until the tops of the mountains could be seen was 6 months (mans’ just judgment)….both on the 17th day… 10 + 7 is now perfect government and organization with God on earth.

God is so amazing and how wonderful to see who He is and how He operates through His Word!
