Exodus 17 – when in despair, water from the Rock

Exodus 17….water from the Rock.  The Israelites found themselves thirsting to death in a desert desolation with no water in sight.  When we find ourselves in a dry desolate place, what do we do?  We feel dry to the bone and our tongue cannot even speak. The only moisture is the tears from our eyes.  Who do we go to?  The Israelites doubted God’s help and thought they would die, but they did cry out to Moses.  They believed Moses could intercede for them.  In the same way, we can cry out to Jesus as our Intercessor and Advocate with Father God.

When nothing in the world seems right, when we feel totally defeated, when we face insufficiency, when heavy sorrow burdens our soul, when all hope seems to be gone….

We should cry with King David in Psalm 42: 1, 6, 9. 11, “As the deer pants longingly for the water brooks so my soul pants longingly after You, O God…my soul is in despair within me, the burden more than I can bear, therefore I will fervently remember You…I will say to God my Rock, ‘ Why have you forsaken me?’….. Why are you in despair, O my soul?  Why have you become restless and disquieted within me?  Hope in God and wait expectantly for Him, for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance, my God.”

Do you recognize how Jesus quoted this scripture in His time of despair on the cross….saying, “why have you forsaken me”.  Yet, Jesus knew this whole prophetic Psalm 42, and He endured the cross by hoping in God and waiting expectantly for His resurrection from the dead!  In our times of long suffering and bearing our cross, we need to do the same.  Trust God.  Hope in God.  Wait expectantly for Him.  Praise Him.  He is faithful.  He has overcome the world and takes our hand that we might join Him in overcoming.

Exodus 17 is prophetic of Jesus, our Savior.  Jesus is the Living Water.  He is the Rock of our salvation.  Matthew 7: 24-27, Matthew 16:18, Daniel 2:35.

His sacrifice and resurrection pours new refreshing life in us!

While meditating on God and His faithful love, how can my soul remain in despair?  He has lifted me up to praise and thanksgiving in His presence!
