Exodus 28..Instructions for the Priestly Garments

Exodus 28…here we find instructions for the garments of the High Priest and the priests. This also points to Jesus as our High Priest (Hebrews 3:1) and His people as ministering saints under Him. In verses 2 and 40, we see that these garments are to represent dignity and honor. Most of the chapter describes the High Priest garments because Jesus is the focus. The ministering priests under Him wore pure white tunics, turban hats, and sashes, also representing righteousness.

I will simply describe the High Priest garments, but I suggest you check the youtube video titles “Exodus 28 – The Jewish Priestly Garment”. A picture is worth 1000 words.

For the High Priest, the under shorts, tunic hat, and sash are made of pure white fine linen…representing purity and righteousness. A blue sleeveless robe is worn over the white tunic…blue representing heaven and holiness. The rest of the garments are intertwined threads of blue, purple, red, real gold, and white linen. Jesus is all the characteristics of all these colors in one man…Son of God (blue), royalty (purple), Son of Man and Savior by His shed blood (red), priceless king (real gold), total purity and righteousness (white).

A stone on each shoulder bears the names of the 12 tribes of Israel, God’s people…6 names engraved on each stone. Jesus bears us up on His shoulders. His breastplate holds 12 gems representing the 12 tribes of His people. These stones came from the earth, are polished in being great workmanship, and had names engraved on them. We, as humans are of the earth, are polished I being His workmanship, and He engraves our names on His heart, never to be erased. They are His precious treasures chose to His heart.

Inside the pocket of this breastplate are 2 more stones whose names mean “light” and “perfection”. These describe Jesus inner man, but they also describe the Holy Spirit within. We are also becoming more like Him by walking in His light and learning/practicing His perfection. Also, notice that the gold used in these garments must be purified by fire and hammered into the shape of their purpose. As His precious treasure, He also perfects us through the fire and pounding of His hands.

On the forehead of the pure white turban hat, was a kingly crown with the inscription “Holy To The Lord”. Jesus is High Priest and King!
