Exodus 32: 1-9. This chapter picks up with what has been happening in the camp of Israel while Moses and Joshua were up on the mountain. It was back at the end of chapter 24 where Moses left Aaron and Hur to be in charge of the people. As Moses spokesman, Aaron was already seen as a leader. Exodus 24:18 tells us ahead that Moses is on top of the mountain for 40 days and nights. Remember, the number 40 is the time of testing. Moses, as the prophetic representation of Jesus, faithfully hears and obeys the Word of God, intending to obey to the detail. What about God’s people? Do they pass the testing time? NO!
They still have the mind and heart of an Egyptian. Remember, God has given them His instructions and they have promised to do them and follow Him. But, now they cannot see their leader Moses, so they lose faith. They go back to their old ways of building and worshipping idols. They use gold jewelry, the wealth of Egypt given to them by God, and make the image of the mighty authority, Bull god, Apis (also referred to as Hapis and Ptah). They announce this is their god who they will worship. They offer sacrifices to their idol in worship. Then, they have a pagan celebration with singing, dancing, entertainment, carousing, and sexual immorality…no moral restraint!
God tells Moses to go quickly to his people who have corrupted themselves. They have already turned away and broken God’s command to have no other gods before Him. They are a stiff necked, stubborn, and rebellious people! God’s holy anger burns against them. They are like and adulterous bride! God could destroy them and complete His plan of redemption through Moses and his family only!
Ecclesiastes 1:9, “That which has been is that which will be again, and that which has been done is that which will be done again. So there is nothing new under the sun.”
This is the dramatic, horrible, evil pattern beginning in the nation of Israel, that of the adulterous woman….the prostitute of Proverbs, the prostitute wife of Hosea, the adulterous women in Jeremiah 3 and Ezekiel 16 who are Israel in the north and Judah in the south. It is the Jewish priests who become corrupted in Babylon, the religious corrupted Pharisees and Sadducees who turn against Jesus. Even notice the 7 churches in Revelation who Jesus instructs and warns of deception, corruption, and the possibility of their lamp going out without repentance. What about the Whore of Babylon in Revelation?
Do not give attention to the seductive lure of the adulterous woman! Do not even go near her street!
