Hebrews 7: 1-28
In Hebrews 5: 1-10 we were introduced to Melchizedek, the king of Salem and appointed priest of the Most High God. Melchizedek means “king of righteousness” and he ruled over Salem (place of peace) as king and priest of righteousness and peace. No one kept record of his generational line, his birthday, or date of death. Yet, he was great and honored! Abraham gave Melchizedek a tenth of his spoils. Melchizedek forshadows Jesus as the true king and high priest of righteousness and peace. Jesus is without beginning or end, and He is priest without predecessor, interruption, or successor. We honor Jesus with tithes and offerings.
We know the old covenant law required people to tithe to the Levitical ancestry of priests. But, the eventual seed of Abraham producing Levi was in the body of Abraham when he tithed to Melchizedek. So, we see that Melchizedek’s priesthood is greater than Levi’s priesthood…because the lesser person always seeks the blessing of the greater by tithes and offerings. Abraham honored Melchizedek.
If a perfect relationship with God could be attainable by the Law and the Levitical priesthood sacrifices, then it would not be necessary to have a Messiah Savior as a new kind of Priest offering a perfect sacrifice under a new perfect covenant. But, the Levitical sacrifice of animals’ blood was not perfect, so God appointed a new order and rank of priesthood like that of Melchizedek, who resembles the Son of God. Jesus was from the tribe and line of Judah (the kingly tribe), not Levi (priests of the old covenant law).
Verse 22 tells us that Jesus is the Guarantee of a better, more excellent, more advantageous, and stronger covenant agreement And Jesus holds His priesthood forever unchageable. Under the Levitical priesthood, when one died, then another had to replace him. But, death does not touch Jesus. He can save and remit sins competely, perfectly, finally and for all eternity! Jesus lives as our King and High Priest forever!
He always lives to make intercession for us! He totally understands as He humbled himself to become human, yet remained holy and unstained by sin. He is now exalted high at the right hand of the Father. Jesus no longer needs to bring daily sacrifices as He met the requirement for all sin by His shed blood, when He brought Himself as the final sacrifice for sin. Jesus is the only begotton Son of God who was appointed and made the perfect King and High Priest of righteousness and peace! He is Lord over all those who come to God through Him. Thank You for revealing more of Yourself in this chapter. Thank You Lord for the new and perfect covenant of righteousness in Jesus Christ and peace with God!
