This Psalm is quoted in Romans 3: 10-18.
The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”
Fact is….We are all born corrupted. Everyone sins. God looks down to see if anyone is seeking Him. Don’t the workers of iniquity (doing it wrong) have any knowledge or understanding? Can’t people see that everything and everyone is mesed up and needs saving? They should call on God!
Oh, that salvation would come through the Messiah promised to Israel! That is Jesus! God frees His people from the captivity of evil through Jesus! God’s people will rejoice and be glad!
Psalm 54 is a prayer. In short, it says….”Jesus, HELP!!!!”
While Psalm 54 was a short cry for help. Psalm 56 is about bearing all that is on your heart and mind to the Lord. Our conversations with Him can come in many forms. You may have talked with God in restlessness, being distraught, with moaning and complaining too….as you read this prayer reflect on all that is happening in our world today….
Lord, my enemy is distracting me with noisy threats of oppression, trouble, and wrath. My heart is grievously pained and even in fear and terror about what could be coming. I just want to hide or run far away from it all! I have seen violence, strife, ruin, mischief, fraud, deceit, iniquity, and hate in the cities and the marketplace. If this only involved strangers, it would not be as burdensome. But, even some of my friends and family are now divided from me and against me as a result of all of this.
O Lord destroy the schemes of the enemy and stop their mouths. Let desolation and nothingness come suddenly upon them. They live in evil in their inner most being and are destined for hell.
As for me, I will always call on You Lord and You will save me. You have redeemed my life in peace from this evil battle. You will bring down the evil ones who will not change their heart, who will not fear and reverence You. I thought some of these people were my companions for good, but they were betrayers of friendship and loyalty and broke their agreements, not keeping their word. They only spoke smooth, soft words, but war and back stabbing were really in their hearts.
I cast these, my burdens, on You Lord and release the weight of them. You will never allow those who stay consistently in right standing with You to fail and be utterly destroyed. Verse 23, “But, You, O God, will bring down the wicked to the pit of destruction, men of blood and treachery will not live out half of their days. But I will trust in, lean on, and confidently rely on You.”
What do you do when you are feeling trampled, troubled, oppressed, trapped, swallowed up, or people are twisting your words and have thoughts to hurt you? Go to the Lord!
Verses 3-4, “What time I am afraid, I will have confidence and put my trust and reliance in You. By the help of God, I will praise His Word, on God I lean, rely, and confidently put my trust. I will not fear. What can man, who is flesh, do to me?”
Verse 8, “You number and record my wanderings, put my tears into Your bottle – are they not in Your book?”
Verse 9, “Then shall my enemies turn back in the day that I cry out; this I know, for God is for me.”
Verse 12, “Your vows are upon me, O God; I will render praise to You and give You thank offerings/”
Have you ever felt the strong love, shelter, and safety of being cradles in our Heavenly Father’s arms? That is how this Psalm opens.
Verses 7-8, “My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is steadfast and confident! I will sing and make melody. Awake my inner self….”
You may recognize the last verses of this Psalm as used in a popular Christian song…verses 9-11.
“I will praise and give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to You among the nations. For Your mercy and loving-kindness are great, reaching to the heavens, and Your truth and faithfulness to the clouds. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, let Your glory be over all the earth!”
I do not often share political views as that seems to lead to division. Let me just say that I think both Republican and Democrat parties have come under deceptive and divisive leadership. Today, I do not put my trust in any political leaders. That is what this Psalm speaks to me about today.
Today’s leaders seem to be silent about God’s true righteousness and justice. Are they really judging fairly and rightly? No! They are devising wickedness and dealing out conflict and violence in the land! The speak lies! They cast charming and cunning spells on people with their words! They sound good and godly, but their heart is not really for God or good. Their mouths are really the fangs of lions with the goal to devour and overpower.
We know we cannot win over this by ourselves, or even as people “doing it together”. We need God! He will take down these wicked rulers. The unyielding righteous will rejoice when they see His vengeance on evil.We will truly rejoice when Jesus comes to rule in righteousness, goodness, and peace!
Verse 11, “Men will say, Surely there is a reward for the uncompromisingly righteous, surely there is a God who judges on the earth.”
Here we read about God’s people being spied on, chased down, persecuted, and martyred by wicked, mighty, and violent men. This has been happening in various places since Jesus crucifixion and resurrection….and is still happening in some place today! The most persecuted and martyred people on earth today are Christians.
Read this Psalm 59 to get an idea of what this is like!
Then, remember Revelation 13 that tells us that a great antichrist beast will rise up in the last days to persecute and kill Christians on a global level! Will God still find faith in the earth? Will He find those who will trust Him even under these horrible circumstances? And even then, remain faithful to God and say with this Psalm…verses 16-17?….
I will sing of Your mighty strength and power, of Your mercy and loving-kindness, of Your defense and refuge, and Your steadfast love! I will sing praises to my God!
What happens when God’s people walk away from God?
The land shakes and the people are scattered and suffer hard things. God sets up a standard of truth so that those who still revere Him can run to it. His beloved ones are delivered by His right hand. God does not reject His people. They left Him! He will restore them to Himself if they return to Him. We need God to help against our adversary. The salvation and help from mankind is vain, ineffectual, and purposeless. Only through God will we do valiantly. Jesus is our true Savior.
These words are fulfilled in Jesus.
Oh Lord, hear my prayer. When my heart is overwhelmed and fainting, lead me to the Rock that is higher than me. You are my rescue and shelter from the adversary. I dwell in Your presence forever. I trust in You. You have heard my vow to forever honor and revere You and Your name. You prolong the true King’s life and His reign to the last generations of this world and the world to come. Jesus sits enthroned forever before the face of God, with loving-kindness and faithfulness watching over Him. So, I will sing praises to Jesus forever, according to my vow.”
